cheating in online poker?
I’m on a school computer so I can’t look it up in school, but does anyone know any of the cheating people do in online poker? Like actaul facts and not opionions on cheating. Like how easy it is to call your friends and talk about hands, or hack into the system. Like any ways that it is possible to cheat in online poker, and how likely it is to happen, and how often people get caught and etc. thanks.
playing with others is pretty mch the only way u can cheat yes u can sit at the same table and chat on phone or yahoo messenger or whatever but u shouldnt do this. It is immoral. as for hacking its impossible. The only people who have ever done this are people who worked for the company and even that hasnt happened that much but it has happened.

People can be on the phone or talking, but people at tables will report if they see suspect play, and the sites will investigate. They’ll review the play between the people and if they come to the conclusion there was cheating, their accounts could be closed and money lost.
How easy is it to call your friends? Pretty easy if you have their phone number and know how to use a phone.

I would say with all the money that online poker makes it would be practically impossible to break into a system. They deal so many hands that it wouldn’t be possible, even with the shuffling algorithm to predict the cards because they use variables like the temperature inside the server room.
I’m sure talking with your friends happens all the time though.

About the only way this would work is with single-table tournaments and sit-and-gos – MTTs generally distribute the players among tables at random. You might get away with that sort of thing for a while, but chances are someone will catch on to the same people repeatedly sitting at the same tables sooner or later.

There are various ways that people can cheat online. Two major sites, ultimate bet and absolute poker, were involved in cheating scandals recently where there was a "superuser" account that could see all of the other players’ hole cards. In both cases, it was someone working in the upper management of the company that was involved in the cheating. It is next to impossible for someone to cheat like this on pokerstars and completely impossible on full tilt poker (due to how their software was designed).
Another way people have cheated is by multi-accounting. Basically, one person has several accounts on a site and logs into all of them at the same time. He/she then registers for a tournament and has multiple entries rather than the 1 that a normal, noncheating player has. More entries=higher chance of winning/placing high in the standings.
Collusion is somewhat present in online games, especially in cash games. Two or more friends will sit at a table and IM or call each other and let each other know what cards they have, etc. This is easy to detect given that all of the hands played on a site are saved and sophisticated software can detect patterns when the same players play with each other often.

Here is a link to an article about cheating at poker that discusses online cheating. It is much more common than most people realize.

And a couple big sites have had cheating scandals recently, Absolute Poker and Ultimate Bet both had super users who could see the other players cards, according to the articles.

The Absolute Poker scandal was one of the biggest cases of cheating. The cheater got caught. He stole over a million bucks through use of a super user account, while working for the company (as mentioned above). The money he stole was confiscated and redistributed to the players he cheated against.
Professional poker player Mark Teltscher played multiple accounts in the 2007 WCOOP event at Pokerstars, and successfully won the tournament, taking the first ever online prize in excess of $1,000,000. He too was caught, was not paid the money, and the money was distributed to the other tournament players, effectively moving every other player one step up in the payscale.
Poker sites are generally good at pursuing and catching cheaters. They do follow up well on collusion suspicions. But collusion remains the most common cheat that a player should be concerned with. There are just so many players, and the idea to share info about the hands is such an obvious concept, tons of people try it.
Happily, I will report from experience that the collusion is not so rampant as to make the games unbeatable as a whole. The fact that it’s possible to beat the games fairly suggests that cheating occurs only in the minority of cases. And, whenever you alert a poker site (as I have with Party Poker) to the fact that you suspect collusion, they follow up with careful examination of the players’ histories.
If you’re highly concerned about the dangers of collusion, you can stick to heads up play. Then you’re playing against only one opponent, and no one can help them. As noted above, multi-table tourneys are usually semi-safe because partners don’t have the option to deliberately sit together at the same table.
It also appears that, of those who try to cheat, most are very unsophisticated, unsuccessful, and are often caught. While I know that some of them may be cutting into my overlay, they haven’t taken it away completely. The games remain beatable.

Excellent answer zadignose. I’d like to add that if you’re playing at the right sites then even if you run into a bit of collusion it won’t matter as you’ll have 2 chimps working together. I did an experiment a few years ago where I played against 2 guys who were decent but not great players and I allowed them to collude all they want including showing each other their cards and I still cleaned both of them out. Colluding isn`t anywhere near as big an advantage as a lot of people think. Essentially they can do stuff like build pots for each other but if you`re better than they are this just means that you`ll make more from them than normal.
