Body oils and food particles will turn any into a dirty little token that no one will want to pick up.

You know it’s time to clean your poker chips when they begin to offend your senses. Here are a few tips to follow to keep your poker chips looking great, and won’t have any damaging effects on them. But, how you clean them is your own personal preference. I need to point out that these suggestions don’t apply to antique chips. When it comes to poker chips, the cleansers you can use may seem limitless but we can certainly narrow it down to a few choices. When choosing your cleanser, there are three important properties it must have before it is even considered. To keep from damaging your poker chips, you’ll need to make your choice wisely.

The cleanser you choose needs to pass the following test.

Removes Built Up Grime: Must be able to remove built up food particles and body oils.

Must Leave Ink Intact: The very last thing you need is to remove the ink from your poker chips. Make sure the cleanser isn’t too harsh so as to dissolve the ink.

Leaves Your Poker Chips Hydrated: Sounds strange huh, but in order to keep your chips from becoming brittle they need a certain level of moisture in them. Rubbing alcohol and similar agents can dissolve the ink and leave your chips dry.

Many veteran poker players use cleaners such as Armor All Multi-Purpose Cleaner, Sterling Magic and just regular dishwashing detergent to clean their poker chips. If you chose to use Armor All, to keep from damaging your chips, make sure it’s the multi-purpose type and not ant of the other Armor All products. Quick ‘n’ Brite is another popular cleaner you can use.

It’s always best to use a very soft cotton towel or a very soft-bristled baby toothbrush to clean your poker chips. You want to make sure you take extra care to protect the center design of the chip. Go around the outer edges of the chip with the soft toothbrush while keeping your thumb over the center. Be sure to rinse your poker chips in a bowl of water and then dry them with the soft cotton towel.

If you want to restore their luster and add that extra shine, dip your poker chips in baby oil after cleaning them.
