Doyle’s books are a decent read but and you can glean some good info from among the piles of pages but are pretty dated and aren’t really geared to the average joe. I’ve never heard of the book Dover is talking about but sounds like it’s worth checking out. The classic, the bible, is still The Theory of Poker and after all these years there still hasn’t been anything written that can compete and it’s a must read for any budding poker player.

It really depends. Do you want to learn about tournament play or ring games?
Which variety of poker do you want to play? Hold’em, Omaha, Stud, Draw, Razz, what? Do you want to play limit, pot limit, no limit? Do you want to play regular or high / low?
But if you just want to learn No Limit Texas Hold’em, which is the common game these days, I’d look out for anything by Dan Harrington. He has two volumes on both tournament and ring games, and an exercise book on tournaments to check what you have learned.

A good all around book that will teach you both cash, SNG and multi-table play is Super System, by Doyle Brunson. I’ve got the original which is 600 pages deep, so you have to be patient. I understand that there is now a Super Systems 2 available, I have not read yet, but I have heard it is the same principles as the 1st edition, with other pros writing some chapters and an online poker chapter. Either way you can’t go wrong with something from Doyle.

The best one around, IMHO, for new players is the Texas Holdem Dynamic Point Count. It provides a point count system that covers all the hands, your position, the table action, the table dynamics, stakes and type of game. The point count system seems to work best at tournaments, but applies well to ring games too.
