what is good texas holdem poker tournament strategy?

I am thinking about going down to vegas for fun to play in a couple of holdem tournaments. What are the best hands to play with to start and what is a to last long in a big tournament?

You can last a by folding most hands – however you are not likely to cash in a large tournament this way. Play your position, play aggressively, and get all of your chips in even when you have a slight edge. Pay attention to other players stacks – don’t try to bluff a big stack, but you can sometimes bluff or push a small stack around depending on the size of the pot. If you play tight early you can take advantage later and may be able to buy some pots. One simple rule I try to keep in the back of my head: Play small pots with small hands, play big pots with big hands.

You will not last long in a tournament unless you understand the game a little. Pick up Phil Gordon’s Little Black Book. It’s short, easy and fun to read, and you will learn enough to have fun at the table.

You should never play with the mindset that my card will come out next, this is a novice instinct that can lose you all your chips. Just be mindful of the odds of you getting such a card that will give you the winning hand. The easiest way to work out the odds of you getting the card that gives you the winning hand, or simply if you should play on or not is to calculate how many of these cards are left in the deck (called outs) that can give you the winning hand.

As a reference in Texas hold em every out is worth about 2% ( averaged because another player may indeed have one of your outs in their own hand.) So if you have four outs that if any or all come out give you the best hand possible, your odds would be roughly 4 x 2% = 8% that one of your out cards will be dealt next. Your chances of drawing one of your cards with two cards to be dealt will be 4 x 4% = 16%. Using odds is a major part in any good poker player’s play.
