I tend to avoid eye contact when playing poker. Is that a good strategy? I forfeit studying my opponent?

but in return they can’t tell what I’m thinking. What do you think about that? If I’m constantly looking at the table people can’t tell if I’m bluffing or serious.
Well the thing is if I’m never making eye contact, they can’t know if I’m bluffing or I actually have cards. The only ‘tell’ I use is the sound of their voice. It slightly changes but maybe I should start wearing sunglasses I guess.

cannot read an opponent by looking into their eyes, regardless of what they tell you. If you’re playing more experienced or better players, chances are you’ll give up more information than you’ll get in a stare down.

Almost as much can be learned by staring at a player’s hands and seeing their face in your peripheral vision, and you’re a lot less likely to give up information than getting into a stare off.

Of course, you could always wear mirrored glasses, but if you’re playing at low stakes games it will just make you look like a douche.

No and I am 65 years old and I started when I ws a teenager. You want to study even body movement such as wiping their brow a lot and sweating and any sort of nervousness. You need to judge by looking at them and watching them whether they are putting on the big act and bluffing. It takes your concentration and working your mind and body together. You need to try this. Hope I have helped you in some way. But I am also an honest Christian.

You should be studying your opponent every chance you get and you know he is studying you too. There are many tells that are found in body language. If you think that your eyes may be giving away your hands, then maybe try wearing a pair of sunglasses when you play or even a baseball cap or the tradtional poker dealer hat.

people incorrectly interpret a "tell" as merely when somebody smiles or blinks a lot or some other facial twitch, but there’s so much more to it than that.

it’s fine to avoid eye contact (staring down an opponent is a tell in itself), but you really need to be watching for other things like the way they treat their hole cards or a changing body position or the way they bet their chips.

If you are so scared of your opponents that you are worried about making eye contact with them you are playing in a game that is above your head. Play a softer game instead and have some fun. Start at the lowest levels and learn to beat those first.

I guess if it works for you then it is good. But for me , I tend to focus on their movements as well as faces. sometimes body movements, facial expressions helps in giving you a hint. Know more about this here http://www.goarticles.com/cgi-bin/showa.cgi?C=2508559
